She was tall with a quick mind.
She was generous and thoughtful.
We did not always agree but
respected one another.
Our friendship grew.
She and her husband David
introduced us to Vancouver Island.
We spent summer holidays together,
fishing and exploring this beautiful place.
In time we all retired to the “Island.”
We to Victoria, they to Boat Harbour;
an easy trip to a warm welcome.
One day our dear friend Earleyne died.
I have been unable to accept the loss.
I had never written about it,
now the tears flow with my words.
What would she say to me?
She would be kind,
She always was,
if kindness would sooth a hurt.
She was so brave!
She knew her time had come.
She phoned to say good-bye.
She had done all the things,
needed to be done. No fanfare.
Just a gentle breeze which
kissed the trees and sea.
She had gone.
